ep. 154 Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut and the (non)missing scene with Sean McCann & Crypto-K
Divulgence podcast episode 154:
Was Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut really altered after his death—or have audiences spent more than 25 years searching for missing footage that was never missing in the first place? In this episode of Divulgence, Jordan is joined by Kubrick researchers Sean McCann and Alex of Crypto-Kubrology for a deep dive into one of the most persistent mysteries surrounding Stanley Kubrick’s final film. The conversation begins with Vivian Kubrick’s recent comments addressing the legendary “missing 20 minutes” and quickly develops into a much larger examination of Kubrick’s filmmaking. Rather than searching for a deleted sequence that supposedly explains the mysteries of Eyes Wide Shut, Sean and Alex argue that the clues may already exist within the movie itself—and within Kubrick’s larger body of work. From the strange fate of Helena and the film’s masked ritual to Kubrick’s obsessive approach to editing, timing, symbolism and visual composition, the group explores the possibility that Eyes Wide Shut functions as one piece of a much larger cinematic puzzle. Alex and Sean demonstrate some of their experiments synchronizing Kubrick’s films with themselves and with one another, revealing striking visual, thematic and numerical correspondences involving recurring time intervals, imagery, dialogue and motifs. The discussion examines Kubrick’s fascination with clocks, numbers and precise editing—and asks whether these apparent connections are coincidence, interpretation, or evidence of an extraordinarily elaborate structure embedded throughout his films. The group also discusses Jan Harlan’s role following Kubrick’s death, the changes made to the ritual sequence, the opening shot of Alice, recurring references such as CRM-114, the significance of the number 19, occult and mythological symbolism, connections between Eyes Wide Shut, The Shining, Barry Lyndon, 2001, A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket and Kubrick’s other films, and the idea that Kubrick’s movies may be intended to communicate with one another. Sean, Alex and Jordan go deep into Kubrick’s final masterpiece and ask whether the enduring mythology of a missing cut has actually distracted audiences from something far stranger hiding in plain sight. The episode also previews the upcoming K-Team, which will bring together a rotating group of Kubrick researchers to explore individual films, recurring concepts and Stanley Kubrick himself in future discussions.
