As a newborn, she was labeled a “sick baby.” When she was finally diagnosed at 6 months old, she was given 5 years to live with a Cystic Fibrosis diagnosis. That was over 30 years ago. In this Live, Sara Cross shares her experience growing up in a medical world and how she harnessed her situation to fuel her passion in creative & activist endeavors to change our world for the better.
She shares her Mental Tool Kit to deal with the Medical System in the US. She’ll discuss the following in depth:
1. Know the Hippocratic Oath, HIPPA Laws, and Nuremberg Code. These are all fully enforceable in a legal court of law.
2. Become the Steward of your treatment. Know and understand the language surrounding your situation. Research your condition in advance and ask as many questions as you need to fully comprehend your treatment. Sarah has many additional suggestions for this: paper copies of original medical records, who you give your information to, and more.
3. Hospital Policy does not override the law. Stand your ground. If someone makes a mistake, call them out and follow through. Your voice and power of “no” are tools that many are afraid to use.
4. Consent forms are not contracts. You can change your mind at any time. The patient is the boss at all times - remember that!
5. Doctors are human - research your doctor and get 2nd opinions.
6. All treatments are experimental. Each person’s body is unique and will interact differently with each intervention. When we look for medical treatment, we’re consenting to “trying” an intervention. It is a gamble and it may or may not work for our body.
Sara details the reasons and methods to apply these concepts. Awareness of these tools empowers us as people and as patients to understand the system so that we can navigate it most effectively.
