WW2 bomber pilots reportedly saw odd craft flying around them over Germany with incredible maneuverability that they termed Foo fighters. This would help with connecting some of the dots. Also, the term flying saucer appeared in our popular lexicon right after WW2 when a pilot spotted a group of craft he compared to upside-down saucers which would further support this narrative. Since pilots were spotting these secret crafts, moving these operations to Antarctica to provide cover would make sense.
