Of course the things I bring up are vastly situational and shouldn't not be taken for over-generalization, but with a grain of whatever granule you prefer- it's okay if you're salty about it. I'm just sharing some things that have come to mind when hearing and observing some of the exaggerated usages of the word that used to be not such a buzzword in the public zeitgeist.. I'm not defending toxic behavior if somehow anyone misinterpreted the messages. I find the word more abrasive than what's been used in the past to describe the same thing- call me old fashioned, but whatever, this is not simple semantics. I just see the ostensible over-compartmentalization of the usage of the word from many..
I totally forgot to touch on the idea of toxic fandom btw and is unfortunate since it's a prime example of how the word toxic is misused.. Oh, your over-budgeted poorly written hollywood modern movies got bombed by dislikes and such from people who've been repulsed by the mediocre media they no longer want to spend their time and money on? "They must be toxic fans.." Going back to the LOTR and Hobbits I mentioned in this video, we can see how bad 'the rings of power' amazon adaptation is and how Tolkien faithfuls find it deplorable, yet they aren't toxic just for not liking something- especially if they have constructive criticism about it.. These spoiled rich self-entitled actors, directors, media pundits and such who get defensive cuz their products suck, tend to use the term toxic to deflect their own bs and not take a look at the mirror or turn around to smell how bad their shit reeks. It's pathetic.
I've been living in France, so I'm a bit outta touch maybe, but i do make an effort to observe things in multiple ways including of course my subjective perspective, but also at an objective lens to keep my bias in check. There are accurate accusations and exaggerated ones with calling something toxic, as well as projections of one's own toxicity onto those not deserving of that particular slander.
